The London launch of Sir Richard Branson’s new book Screw Business As Usual was a very jolly affair. The man himself said all the right things and was ably supported by Jean Oelwang CEO of Virgin Unite, the not-for-profit foundation of the Virgin Group.

The audience included several notable social entrepreneurs, including John Bird, the founder of The Big Issue, whose scene-stealing cameo made my job of running the question and answer session very easy indeed.

Stop thinking about money!

It’s the easiest way to make it.

Dwelling, worrying, planning, fretting, pacing, exhausting – these are some of the many words that come to mind when some people think about money too much. You plan, then you plan some more, then you think about hypothetical situations, then perhaps you rehash the idea, then you think about it some more – meanwhile, you make no money.

People have a lot of ideas, in fact, everyone has ideas. Everyone has thoughts about money, and what it would take for them to live off internet income, or doing what they love while making money. They calculate how much it would take if they decided to do it… then they recalculate, and think about it some more, meanwhile doing nothing.

If the key to coaching is all about perspective, then what is the key to giving great perspective?  As we’ve been saying now for eons…the best criteria that determines your ability to give perspective (to be a life coach) is your life’s experience and all the events that have happened in your life that has given you the ability to reflect.  Reflection and insight, usually something that happens after an “event” occurs in our life, often leads to an ability to offer perspective.

I am a musician. I am self taught, I first started playing the guitar at age fifteen and I have been lucky enough to play in bands, do some touring and even today gracefully going into very young middle age I still travel with my guitar and use it to entertain and educate audiences all over the world.

Music is an amazing vibration. It means so much to so many of us and we struggle to survive without it. In fact it’s been around since the dawn of time. It’s who we are. Music like everything in life has a pattern and it’s amazing how all the patterns in life seem to blend together. There are twelve months in a year. There are twelve notes in music. There are seven days in a week. There are seven different notes in a scale, plus the octave. There are twelve stages of life based on Hinduism. Now let’s look at this from an entirely different level.

Leadership is defined as a journey, a course that is set – and every journey has its challenges. By nature, leadership involves everyone. While those who own, run and manage organisations are the ones who are called or appointed to be in a leadership position, everyone in an organisation has a leadership role to play, simply in leading themselves in doing their best in the team, and in enabling others to do their job well too. Just being efficient and effective in your own role means you are part of leading – if only leading by example! Recent UK research suggests that leadership has two distinct aspects: developing recognised leaders as individuals, and developing leadership as culture and practice in the whole organisation.
